Screening: Seeking Mavis Beacon – Documentary

The Internet Archive is hosting a screening of “Seeking Mavis Beacon“, a documentary which investigates the disappearance and reexamines the legacy of one of the most influential Black women in technology.

The most recognizable woman in technology lives in our collective imagination. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing taught millions globally, but the software’s Haitian-born cover model vanished decades ago. Two DIY detectives search for the model while posing questions about identity and artificial intelligence.

The event will be hosted by director Jazmin Jones and collaborator Olivia McKayla Ross.

The screening will be followed by a preserve-a-thon where participants will learn about how to upload items to the Internet Archive, so bring a laptop!
